Ancient Rome (Modern Rhymes About Ancient Times)
Published in School & Library Binding by Children's Book Press (September, 2001)
Authors: Susan Altman, Susan Lechner, Susan Hughes, and Sue Hughes
Average review score:

Nice supplement
Altman and Lechner have created a neat supplement for elementary school students. I was particularly pleased with the range of topics covered. They hit all the important highlights covered in elementary Roman history, from architecture and notable emperors to specific aspects of Roman life such as clothing, eating and Roman numerals. We use Veritas Press history and this just tied right in each week. I suspect in fact that my second grader will remember more from this book than from the more in depth historical texts that we read. He frequently picks this up and reviews Roman Roads, the Praetorian Guard and Nero (his favorite topics anyway). Good for memorizing to go with the Veritas Press cards; the poems provide more than two facts each!

Angel Mae: A Tale of Trotter Street
Published in Hardcover by (February, 1992)
Author: Hughes
Average review score:

Angel Mae - 5 stars!
Angel Mae is a touching story. It gives me the opportunity to talk about many issues with my 3 year old : jelousy, anger, anxiety, excitment, happiness. Yet the story is natural, funny, and definately not soppy. The illustrations are excellent.

Antony and Cleopatra (Arkangel Complete Shakespeare Series)
Published in Audio Cassette by Penguin Audiobooks (January, 2000)
Authors: William Shakespeare, David Burke, and Ian Hughes
Average review score:

Another excellent entry in the Arkangel Shakespeare series
Many decades ago, there was an excellent and elegant reading of the complete text of on Decca/London labels with Richard Johnson and Mary Morris in the title roles. Then came the better-paced Shakespeare Recording Society with Anthony Quayle and Pamela Brown, recently reissued on cassettes by Harper Audio. And now we have the liveliest of them all as part of the Arkangel Complete Shakespeare Series, issued by Penguin Books this side of the Atlantic.

With the older set long out of print, the Arkangel certainly has the most appeal to modern listeners, giving as it does less a reading than the sounds of an actual production. The Antony of Ciaran Hinds does not quite come up to the poetical reading that is Quayle's, while Estelle Kohler's Queen of the Nile is a bit juicier than the more dryly delivered one of Brown. But both partners are really fabulous on their own terms and both performances are well worth having side by side in your collection.

The Arkangel set does make some strange use of regional accents. Perhaps they are strange only to American ears (viz., mine), but it continues to be a bit jarring to hear Scottish accents on Roman soldiers. On the other hand, the use of Cockney for the lower classes has become an accepted tradition on British recordings, so perhaps we can grow accustomed to anything, given enough time and understanding.

Teachers should take note, however, that classes will probably respond better to this new, more dramatized version despite a little loss in the grand old style of poetic declamation.

Arna Bontemps-Langston Hughes Letters, 1925-1967
Published in Hardcover by Dodd Mead (February, 1980)
Author: Arna Wendell Bontemps
Average review score:

Letters that open a window of time.
This is one of the most touching, endearing books I have ever been blessed to read. Think of it! For forty-two years Arna Bontemps and Langston Hughes wrote letters to each other---literally thousands of letters. From 1925 to 1967, when Mr. Hughes passed away---a period of astounding historical events, during which they wrote. Both men were born in 1902, and met in Harlem in 1924 when attending a poetry reading of Countee Cullen's. They became friends immediately, soon collaborating on their first of several successful books written together. Within the pages of these letters is a treasure trove. The wealth of information is incredibile. We begin during the Harlem Renaissance...then the south and New York City during the Depression...from this, World War II, followed by the many events of the fifties and sixties. Throughout it all, the men are struggling both as writers, and as African Americans during a time of horrendous Jim Crow and lynching. But the horrors of such discriminations do not defeat them...with untold courage and dignity both writers plunge onward. By the time both men reached retirement age, they each had become so famous that universities were diligently seeking to obtain their letters! Charles Nichols who selected and edited their letters here, writes a wonderful introduction about the lives of both men. Aside from a really neat chronology following the letters, the whole of the book is dedicated to the letters. There is so much here, folks. This is one, very awesome book, and I highly recommend it to anyone.

Artists in California, 1786-1940
Published in Hardcover by Hughes Pub Co (June, 1989)
Author: Edan Milton Hughes
Average review score:

Fabulous, Necessary Book for Collectors of California Art
This book is the most useful reference book about early California art that I own. For collectors and dealers, this book is a must-have. There are no photographs, just biographies, but for collectors the information provided is invaluable. This book took years and years of hard work on the part of Edan Hughes. He deserves praise and accolades for such a monumental achievement!

Old West cooking
A trip back into the Old West. Learning how to cook like the chuck wagon cooks did, whether it's Dutch oven, Pit cooking, or cooking by campfire...it's all there! Cooking for one or two up to a thousand, whatever you wish! Great ideas about how things have been done in the past in handling food, even alternative refrigeration without electricity in the hot Arizona summer days. Great variety of recipes and good 'how to's' along with great humor and lore about the Old West.

Barbecuing the Weber Covered Way
Published in Hardcover by Tested Recipes Pub (September, 1980)
Authors: Carol D. Brent and Betty A. Hughes
Average review score:

Easy and practical...a beginner's bible.
This book is excellent to use year round. The recipes are easy to prepare and the directions are clear. The ingredients are those you usually have around the kitchen or found readily at the super market. It also tells you how to get the best from your Weber grill, be it either the charcoal or gas variety, as well as menu suggestions. I thought I lost my copy and went to order another one in panic. Now that I found my original copy, I plan on trying to find another one for my daughter. An excellent resource!
